- Fleur: For breakfast I eat yoghurt with a little bit of sugar and muesli and a glass of water. My first snack consists of a tangerine , 2 cookies and water. My lunch consists of 2 slices of bread with cheese and water. When I arrive at home, I have another snack which consists of a cookie and a glass of water. Then for my evening meal we eat potatoes, meat and lettuce most of the time. With this I drink a glass of ice tea. Sometimes I eat a third snack, which may consist of a piece of fruit or some cookie. With this I drink tea
- Mylène: For breakfast I eat two Dutch rusks with chocolate sprinkles and butter. I usually don’t eat at school but when I do, I eat bread with cheese or some crackers. When I come home from school I eat yoghurt with banana. Then for dinner I eat potatoes or rice with any kind of vegetables and a vegetarian snack. In the evening I sometimes eat a small bowl of crisps or a cookie.
- Mika: In the morning I usually eat some bread. Most of the time I put cheese on it. How many food I eat depends on the time I have left to eat my breakfast. At school I eat bread as well. 1 slice in the small break and 2 slices in the big break, most of the time with cheese. When I get home I eat a snack. Most of the time it is an apple but sometimes I eat something more, like a banana. As dinner I eat vegetables, meat and rice, potatoes or pasta. We sometimes leave the meat out.
- Bart: For breakfast I always eat 1 sandwich with appelstroop and drink 2 cups of tea, in the first break at school I eat 2 sandwiches, 1 cookie and I drink chocolatemilk. Two hours later, in the next break, I eat another 2 to 4 sandwiches and drink 500ml of lemonade. When I’m done with school and I’m back at home I eat another small snack which usually consists of an apple and a glass of lemonade. Then we have diner, this differs per day but usually we have pasta with tomato sauce and some cheese. Before going to bed I have another cup of tea and a small piece of chocolate.
Meals that are ‘greener’ than the meals we usually eat could for instance contain organic vegetables from the store or vegetables that are grown in our own garden. Organic vegetables are vegetables where producers haven’t used fertilizer and/or pesticides to grow them. Furthermore we only would buy vegetables or other products which are not transported to our country by truck, ship or plane, thus producing less emissions. Another thing we could do is eat no meat because animals produce a lot of manure which contains methane. Methane pollutes the air. We should also take into account that not all meat pollutes our nature in the same way. For instance: biological meat is better than non-biological meat. For biological meat cows, pigs or chickens are not injected with antibiotic to prevent them for diseases. Eating biological meat is better for our own health.
Most food we eat in our group is produced in the Netherlands, like bread and cheese. The bananas we eat are not from the Netherlands. They come from warm regions like South-America, they have to be shipped to the Netherlands. This contributes to the co2 emission. The apples and vegetables we buy though, are produced in the Netherlands. They contribute less to the co2 emission in comparison with the bananas.

We decided to make meals for the family of Mika. The other members of the group had some problems with negotiations with their family. You will read the reviews of the mother and brother of Mika's family and of Mika herself. Mika did not encounter any problems in preparing the food. Eating greener was cheaper because we didn't use any meat and most of the time meat is expensive. The dutch vegetables we bought were relatively cheap.
StarterIngredients
Preheat the oven to 200°C. Mix the cauliflower with the oil in a large bowl, making sure to cover all of the cauliflower with the oil. Bake the cauliflower for 10 minutes until you can easily insert a fork. Once cooked cool for 10 minutes. Mix together all of the remaining ingredients, adding in the cauliflower, then taste to see if you need more salt. Reviews This meal turned out to be delicious. At first we thought that the combination was odd but it tasted great together. It suits as a starter, but we also think that this meal is great as a lunch. In the list of ingredients is no lettuce mentioned. In the picture you can see that some green leaves are in the salad bowl. Indeed some rucola is very nice in it and makes it a fresh salad. |
Main courseIngredients
Boil the rice and roast the vegetables. Place tortilla on a work surface. Spoon rice onto the center of the tortilla. Top with vegetables, scallions and cilantro. Roll up the wrap, cut in half and place on a plate. Reviews We are sure that this meal is a very healthy dish. But it is not tastefull. It lacks a nice and tasty sauce or some melted cheese in or on it. Because of this and with the rice in the roll it is a very dry dish. We like all the vegetables and also the wheatroll, but this combination and the way it is prepared is not as tasty as it looks like in the picture. Next time we would add some cheese or sauce to it. |
DesertIngredients
Mix the margarine with the flour and a little water to make a dough. Roll the dough into a rectangle shape. Spread the dough with apple and jam and sprinkle with sugar. Roll and cut the dough with filling into pieces and place into an oven dish. Bake at 200°C until golden. Sprinkle with sugar. Reviews This was a nice dish. It tasted like applepie. Preparing the dough was a lot of work and I needed some assistance from my mother. She peeled the apples for me and cut them into pieces. I used some vanillasugar instead of the cane sugar. It was delicious and soon I will make this again. |
Interview
We interviewed our geography teacher about eating green. She is a vegan and chooses her food wisely. The central questions we asked her are: Is ‘eating green’ more healthy? Is it better for the environment?
"First of all, the reason I eat “green” or vegan is because I believe that we should try and keep our earth as sustainable as we can. The amount of green gasses in our atmosphere that are a result of intensive livestock farming is if you ask me unnecessary. The amount of fresh water that is being used to produce meat is way too much if you look at how much fresh water is available on our planet. The amount of tropical rainforests that are being chopped, to create arable land for cattlefeeding is a disgrace. Next to that, I think that we should treat animals more human. They are living beings that should not be treated in this way. Eating vegan reduces our ecological footprint enormously. The alternatives are, nowadays, widely available, so saying that going vegan is difficult, is a non-argument. Green eating can be more healthy, but it does not have to be. The thing with every diet is eating a large variety of vegetables/grains/fruits and eat everything in moderation. Too much of something is not good."

Collaboration
We had two video conferences. The first one went pretty well, but we think we could’ve done more research before this videoconference, because they asked us if we had made a plan of action and we didn’t, so we think we could’ve made that. But furtheron, we got to know them a little so that’s a good point! The second video conference also went pretty well, but we had the idea that this time we had more information than the others, since we had done all of our research etcetera and they didn’t do this yet. Nevertheless the points we discussed went pretty good.
Comparison
We couldn't compare with an Indian school, since there isn't any group on the Hiranandani Foundation School that has the subject 'My green meal'. We did our video conference with the group that has 'using herbs as home remedies' as subject.
Reflection
The collaboration went pretty well. At first there was some trouble inside our group because we didn’t really get what we were supposed to do. When we understood what we had to do we divided the questions so everyone could do something. If we had a better look at it we could’ve start our research earlier. This is something we should keep in mind and do differently next time we have to make an assignment. We divided the questions in such a way so everyone had to do an equal amount of work. Everyone send their answers to the group leader who would put everything on the weebly page. We discussed everything in a whatsapp group app we made ourselves.
Conclusion
Our main question was 'How can you make your meals greener?' After gathering all our information we found out multiple things:
